The 'Roudani 434' EP is a musical discovery of the Souss Valley region and High Atlas Mountains in Morocco infused with a contemporary vision produced by French composer and musician Paul Armand-Delille during a three month artists residency in Taroudant.
The EP provides a sonic snapshot of Taroudant, a city at the cultural crossroad of The High Atlas region in Morocco. The "Atlas Collective" featured on this EP is composed of a group of local musicians that Paul Armand-Delille met during the residency. The tracks explore traditional Gnawa sounds: Guembri bass, metallic carcavas with Abdallah Roudani and his group. Featuring vocals by Moncif Bouboul, the potent voice of poet Simo Ba'ala and Parisian based artist Andrey Zouari's experimental vocals alongside the Berber violin and reed flutes. Paul adds to this mix flamenco guitar, analogue synthesizers and subtle electronic touches to produce a sound that reflects a fusion of contemporary and traditional culture.
THE EP 'ROUDANI 434' is the end product of a profound cultural and creative exchange between Moroccan local musicians and French artists. The 5 tracks on the EP allow for each artist to express their vision through solo performances, texts in Arab, English and French are performed in a musical circle whereby each artist would take their turn as is prevalent in the Gnawa tradition.
The album was premiered for private listening on sound stations during the "434" exhibition in Paris on the 11th April 2013 and will now be digitally released online and through iTunes on the 21st of June 2013.
